YunRay Chung

YunRay Chung is a combination of a fashion researcher, concept developer, and performance artist. With a wide range of media like performances, objects, films, and interactive installations, YunRay observes, researches, and tries to understand human emotions and experiences. He builds objects, installations, and performance pieces as his commentary, using second-hand garments as a vessel. The final products can be the deconstructed second-hand garments, his performances, the visual images, or just thoughts. Human compassion and the identity of an Asian who immigrated to the United States have a huge influence on his works, in the 4-part performance "NEW AMERICANA," He used second-hand garments as an extension of human beings, molding them, breaking them, binding them like experiences and traumas immigrants go through; he was interacting with the second-hand clothes like a conversation between two human beings. The handwork on them, whether it was cutting, tying, or gluing, is like the language he speaks to the garments, and throughout the conversation, the garments change. YunRay's main goal is to lead a thought or a discussion in the audience's mind. He hopes to present his works through emotions instead of lectures. When the audience feels what he hopes they feel, then they can pass on the emotion to people around them, bringing more compassion, understanding, and growth to others.
