René Cheng
René Cheng is a bi-cultural Mexican artist of German and Chinese descent living in Mexico and Europe.
“¿Dulce hogar? - Historias Veladas” (Home sweet home - Really?)
Oil painting on textile cotton stretched on wooden canvas, 90 cm x 120 cm, unframed, year 2021
Cheng tells the observer a story, within a story. At first glance it represents a housewife preparing breakfast for her family. You can see different objects of different parts of the world (obviously some Mexican craftsmanship). But looking really closely and knowing the title, you might suspect that not "everything that shines is gold”. Cheng touches a sensible theme: dysfunctional families and violence, which is only perceived from within, while to the outer world they seem so “perfectly happy”.
