Makoto Ambo
Born in Saroma Town in 1962. Graduated from a design school in Hokkaido in 1983. In 1993, he discovered a completely new and unique ink painting technique that is unparalleled in the 4,000-year history of ink painting, in which ink is applied multiple times without leaving any brushstrokes, and was introduced on NHK as "New Japanese Ink Painting". Based on his deep interest and respect for Ainu culture, he has created a masterpiece that depicts the Blakiston's fish owl, which the Ainu worship as the supreme god, from a unique perspective, with the theme of protecting the natural environment. In 2018, he began conservation activities with the theme "Save Dogs and Cats!" In 2024, he will receive the "Leonardo da Vinci Special Gold Award" from the Effetto Arte Foundation in Italy, be recognized as one of the "masters of contemporary art", and be appointed as an "Art Ambassador". He will also receive the prestigious "Creativity Oscar" from the Costanza Foundation in Venice. In 2025, he will be appointed as a hometown support ambassador for his hometown, Saroma Town.
